Nevermind

I got all excited this morning when I read the EVE news feed and saw this article:
"With Carnyx coming to Tranquility it will no longer be possible to launch EVE Online using the exefile.exe file from EVE/bin/ folder. If you are using this method due to the issue with your launcher where 'PLAY' button remains gray after downloading an update, please pay close attention to the information provided in this article."
Two-factor authentication fully in place? Yay! But less than two hours later, CCP published a retraction.
"Greetings players

"If you have previously been using the Repair Tool to update your EVE Online client, attempting to use it to update your client after the Carnyx release may fail.

"If this is the case, you will be required to use the launcher to update your client. If you are unable to use the launcher due to an error, please try reinstalling the launcher using the instructions in this support article.

"If you continue to experience issues with attempting to update your EVE Online client, please contact Customer Support and file a ticket under Technical Support -> Installation and Patching.

"Please note that contrary to the earlier news article, launching the EVE Online client using exefile.exe will continue to work after the deployment of the Carnyx release."
Fortunately I didn't finish the original post on the topic on how CCP had finally fully implemented two-factor authentication and how many players would shout from the mountaintops that using the launcher is evil. I guess that's a post for a future date.

  1. It's so much easier to run both my accounts through the exe file directly. Log off is a lot easier than starting up the launcher again.

  2. The launcher is a massive pain. Period. Fullstop. Just another way to alienate the player base.

Login first, click play, while it loads change account and click play again. I don't see why would you start up the launcher more than once.

  4. But how do you set the startup directory?!

  5. That's how I do it...with the shared cache now, it's all sorted and easy.

  6. I hate to break the news to you, but the launcher is evil. It's a marketing tool that adds another point of failure when DDoS attacks are mounted. It slows things down considerably and is not reliable. It's a piece of shit and it's evil.

  7. It is a hell of a lot easier to run a main from the launcher and two alts from the Exe file. The solution to my problem is simple and was initialised two weeks ago - coming into effect by mid-July.

  8. Come now, it's not that bad. I've seen far far worse. Did you ever play FF11 for example? The horrendous PlayOnline launcher that took about 3 million years every time it had to update.

  9. The problems with the launcher were reported over half a year ago, yet CCP hasn't managed to fix it. I thought that having shorter release cycles would mean that stuff like this would get fixed faster.

Unfortunately, the more frequent release cycle only seems to have encouraged CCP to try to release changes & new features, with much less QA & play testing, before pushing buggy stuff live.

I cringe to think of how badly FozzieSov is likely to break the game, due to being rushed out. Something major like that should be on Sisi for at least 6 months of play testing, in its final form, before going live.

I've needed the exefile sometimes when a patch breaks the launcher completely. Until the launcher is as reliable as the exe, it would be a mistake to enforce it like this.

  11. Do you have the launcher set to auto close after launching? Under settings and general. I don't have special things for each account so I just flip the account names and log them in one after another.
