In September, Cloud Imperium Games, makers of Star Citizen and Squadron 42, earned $5.1 million in sales according to a fan-maintained spreadsheet that tracks sales. The total was $72,000, or 1.5%, more than the sales recorded in September 2022. For the third quarter of 2023, ClG recorded $12.4 million in sales, a 22% decrease from the $15.9 million in sales in Q3 2022. Overall, CIG's sales total for 2023 so far is $66.1 million, a 11.5% decrease from the first nine months of 2022's total of $74.6 million.
Overall, CIG has raised $687.8 million from confirmed sources (the funding page & the 2021 financial report). The income breaks down as follows:
- Sales/Pledges: $605.8 million (through 30 September 2023)
- Subscriptions: $27.8 million (through 31 December 2021)
- All other sources: $54.2 million (through 31 December 2021)
In addition, CIG received $63.25 million in investor funding in 2018 and 2019, bringing the total confirmed funding of the project up to $751 million.
I have to make a mention about my data sources. The CCU website stopped updating sometime in the middle of last week, approximately when the API I had been using also stopped working. I managed to find another spreadsheet to use from reading the Star Citizen Data Community channel.
With the launch of patch 3.20 on 19 September CIG launched another ship sale in addition to the Pirates Week event. While stopping a 5-month streak of declining year-over-year sales decline, I do wonder if some sales surrounding October's Citizen Con were just pushed forward to September.
