Cloud Imperium Games sales exploded last month, setting another monthly record with $9.3 million in sales from player purchases in August. The figure represents a 167.7% increase over sales in August 2024 according to the CCU Game dashboard. Last month also set a new company high for the month of August, surpassing the previous best of $5.3 million in August 2020. For the first 8 months of 2025 CIG recorded $87.2 million in cash shop sales, a 41.6% ($25.6 million) increase over the same period in 2024.
The $861.2 million displayed on the Roberts Space Industries funding page at the end of July was not a comprehensive accounting for all of CIG's revenue since the project's Kickstarter in October 2012. Overall, the company has recorded $985.6 million in confirmed revenue (the funding page & the 2023 financial report).
- Sales/Pledges: $861.2 million (through 31 August 2025)
- Other cash shop revenue: $2.3 million (through 31 December 2023)
- Subscriptions: $39.5 million (through 31 December 2023)
- All other sources: $82.6 million (through 31 December 2023)
In addition, the company has received a total of $68.25 million in outside investment. According to the 2023 financial report, $4.8 million of the amount was returned to investors in 2020 and another $1.9 million in 2023. Including the outside investment money, the total amount raised by CIG to create Squadron 42 and Star Citizen is $1.054 billion, or $1.047 billion when excluding the returned funds. An additional $12.6 million in loans issued in March 2025 and due for repayment on 31 December 2027 are not included in the total.
New Accounts - The new referral program introduced at the beginning of July continues to pay dividends.
While the month-over-month increase in new user accounts was only 12.4% over July's total, the year-over-year increase was 121.5% over that in August 2024. Over the first 8 months of 2025 the website saw the creation of 379,101 accounts, a 16% increase over the same time period in 2024.
The Third Quarter Headlines - So far in the third quarter of 2025 Cloud Imperium has recorded $15.7 million in cash shop sales, or $1.7 million more than the revenue of the entire third quarter of 2024. By the end of today the total will exceed the previous Q3 high of $15.9 million in 2022. We do need to watch the sales in September as if sales reach $9.8 million this month, the third quarter will not be the lowest sales quarter for a year since 2017.
A PvE Playerbase? While many observers raised their eyebrows at Cloud Imperium launching patch 4.3 on a Saturday, I found something in the patch notes very interesting. In patch 4.3 I noticed the following server shard information:
Server Meshing: 7:3:600 Player Shards
From what I've been told my multiple Star Citizen players, the line means that each server shard consists of 10 servers which can hold a maximum of 600 players. Seven of the servers are devoted to run the Stanton system while 3 run the Pyro system.
Looking back at previous patch notes, the Stanton/Pyron split was 5:5 in patch 4.2, 7:3 in patch 4.1, and 5:5 in patch 4.0. Does this indicate the playerbase is more into PvE content as Stanton is a more friendly PvE system while Pyro is built for PvP? And if so, does the split mean Cloud Imperium has an incentive to cater to PvE players?
