Cloud Imperium Games Posts Disappointing Sales Of $5.4 Million In January 2024

Cloud Imperium Games recorded $5.4 million in sales in January 2024 according to the CCU Game - Star Citizen dashboard. Last month's total represents a 30.3% year-over-year decline in revenue to 2023's start of $7.7 million.

Overall, CIG has raised $761.4 million from confirmed sources (the funding page & the 2022 financial report). The income breaks down as follows:

  • Sales/Pledges: $662.8 million (through 31 January 2024)
  • Subscriptions: $33.0 million (through 31 December 2022)
  • All other sources: $65.6 million (through 31 December 2022)

In addition, CIG received $63.25 million in investor funding in 2018 and 2019, bringing the total confirmed funding of the project up to $824.6 million. Of the total through the end of 2022, $1.4 million was paid out to investors as dividends.

January's $5.4 million in sales represents a poor start to the new year for Cloud Imperium. According to estimates I made a year ago today, CIG needed between $128.6 million and $134.6 million in sales in 2023 to break even financially. The company only recorded $117.6 million in sales for 2023.

I am currently reviewing that estimate based on new information from CIG's publicly posted 2022 financial report. I'm pretty sure my estimate of CIG's spending is not going to go down much, if it doesn't climb instead. But in either case, a 30.3% year-over-year decline in revenue is not going to help CIG's finances and allow the company to spend at its current pace.
