Last August when Square Enix forced Mare Synchronos to shut down, one of the reasons I gave was that regulators might upgrade the rating for Final Fantaxy XIV. While I took the ESRB and PEGI ratings into account, I missed out on Japan. With the deployment of Patch 7.5 the rating in Japan goes from CERO C to CERO D.
With the upcoming Patch 7.5, the CERO rating for "Final Fantasy XIV" will change from "CERO C" to "CERO D".
Currently, the "CERO C" rating necessitates restrictions on the Group Pose function. Therefore, to maintain the freedom of Group Pose and avoid these restrictions, we have decided to change the rating to "CERO D".
This change is only to the rating category; there are no changes to the game content, terms of service, or service fees. However, customers under 17 years of age should consult with their guardians regarding this change before using the service.
CERO, or the Computer Entertainment Ratings Organization, is the oversight organization in Japan similar to the ESRB and PEGI.
The reclassification means FFXIV goes from being approved for ages 15 and up to approved for ages 17 and up in Japan. The game will remain "T for Teen" in the U.S. (ages 13+) and PEGI 16 (ages 16+) in Europe.
I do wonder if the game will receive additional ratings updates in the West anytime soon.
